On Friday, September 14, a fast tempo scoring game between the Chaminade Eagles and the Oaks Christian Lions took place on Chaminade’s very own Deep Blue "C" football field. Chaminade football has been ranked at 22nd in California while Oaks Christian has been ranked at 4th in the state and 13th in the nation by MaxPreps.com. Both teams came highly motivated and ready to play their hearts out to make a strong presence in their leagues. Both teams needed a win to hold their spot with the top teams in the state.
The student sections for both teams were present at Chaminade High School. Chaminade’s student section, the “Eagles Nest,” came out hard and started their famous ‘I Believe’ chant with high energy.
At the end of the first quarter, the Eagles took a 21-8 deficit. Even though Chaminade junior Donovan Lee scored breaking tackles and ran from end zone to end zone, Oaks Christian never stopped scoring. The Lions were up 36-15 at the half but the game was not over. While Oaks saw a 21- point lead at halftime, Chaminade came back to cut it to a 13 point difference in the third quarter. Ultimately, Chaminade lost 44-30 when the clock struck 0:00.
Chaminade had just come off of three major wins. In their season opener against Venice High School, it was a breeze winning 37-20 for their first win of the season. For their second win, Chaminade faced Pulaski Academy, an Arkansas state championship team. Chaminade beat Pulaski 49-39 and took that momentum to their next win against Valencia, for a 41-27 win.
In the Chaminade vs. Oaks Christian game, Chaminade senior running back Terrell Newby made a stunning 42 runs with the ball gaining a total of 211 yards. Newby ran for two touchdowns with a total of nine touchdowns this season. Terrell Newby is a member of the Top 25 Running Backs and has led Chaminade to a 3 game winning streak prior to their Oaks Christian loss.
Leading Oaks Christian junior quarterback Brandon Dawkins threw three touchdowns and is a member of 2014 Top 100 Watch List.
Next up for Chaminade is a non-conference game against Notre Dame on Friday, September 28th and a homecoming game against Serra High School on October 5th.
