After a convincing 48-6 victory over Long Beach Wilson last week, Long Beach Poly looks to capture their third straight outright Moore League crown when they visit the Cabrillo Jaguars. With a win Poly (6-3) will secure the Moore League #1 seed and host a Pac- 5 playoff game next week.
Poly is lead by senior linebacker Jayon Brown(UCLA) and a stellar defense which has only given up an average of six points per game in league. An early season ending injury to defensive lineman Raymon Price has allowed seniors Lajay Kelly and Roman Wiant opportunity to sack the quarterback while juniors Jason Fao and Imani Mitchell and sophmore Joseph Wicker clog the middle. The linebacker core includes juniors Caleb Turner and Alton Luke II who just returned from injury, senior Johnnie Mobley, and sophmore Omari Lyles. Since Jaloni Patterson was injured, the secondary has been strenghten with the addition of junior John Smith at safety along with senior Matt Mitai. Sophmore Iman Marshall and senior David Price Jr, who had two interceptions against Wilson, patrol the corners.
Offensively, Poly has used a ground and pound attack to wear down opposing defenses. Senior running backs Manusamoa Luuga and Gerard Wicks(Washington State) carry the load behind fullback Vincent Mindoro, and a big offensive line which includes seniors Jordan Freeman, Khamari Cloud and Isaac Fruean along with juniors Drew Ho, and Sergio Fao. Junior quarterback Eban Jackson II has not thrown an interception in league and looks to get it to playmakers John Smith and senior Thomas Tucker (San Jose State) on the outside.
Poly is known for winning championships. The first step will be tonite with the Moore League crown.
